POOL Trade Show - February 2010

I'm back! Duncan and I made it through another round of wholesale madness in Las Vegas at the POOL trade show. I'm happy to report that it was an even bigger success than our first round back in August. Vivi Dot will be in more stores across the world very soon. More on that later, but for now please check out the awesome video Duncan put together highlighting the the new Spring/Summer line, the Vivi Dot booth and some of the fun we were able to have after the show was complete. Watch out for appearances by Neil Patrick Harris, Perez Hilton, Christina Hendricks, the Cirque du Soleil Elvis performers and more.

This is the first time I applied for this show so it has been anticipation station here at Vivi Dot all morning. Pool Tradeshow Las Vegas!

I made it through my first trade show! Vivi Dot had a booth in the Cash and Carry section of POOL at the beginning of September and it was a great success. Backing up just a bit, I'll explain how this show differs from all of the other shows I've done. POOL is a part of the huge MAGIC trade show where many, many clothing and accessory companies present their lines to buyers from across the world. Buyers from department stores, owners of small town boutiques and everyone in between come to place orders for their businesses. Most brands set up extravagant booths that display their pieces that are currently available for order. The Cash and Carry section that I was in allows buyers to purchase items on the spot so they can try newer lines like Vivi Dot out before they place a larger order. This section also makes it easier for small timers like me to get our foot in the door in the world of wholesaling.

I've been in stores in the Bay Area for a few years, but getting Vivi Dot ready for world wide expansion was a huge undertaking. I started out by redesigning my packaging to give everything a consistent, noticeable look. Hanna Nation, of Gadabout Paper did some amazing drawings of my products as well as created a few of her adorable girl drawings with some Vivi Dot product accents. I incorporated these into the cards I use as well as my line sheet (an informational catalog for buyers).
Vivi Dot Line Sheet
After the packaging was all squared away it was time to come up with an edited assortment of prints and products. Now that I'm designing my own fabrics for the products I'm no longer limited to what I can find at the fabric store. Duncan and I went through numerous iterations and color tests and decided on our favorite prints to use for the show. Since the fabric I get printed is limited in some respects (the saturation of certain colors, etc) I supplemented my designs with some of my favorite prints from Pea Pod Fabrics. Here's the final collection of swatches that were offered:

The last important step in preparing was mass production. I sweatshopped myself right down to the last minute with devoted help from Duncan all along the way. I've done big shows before, but nothing where someone might come by and want to buy 8 of this item and 10 of that item so my mind was reeling with all possible scenarios and how I could prepare myself for each of them.

Finally it was time to go so I packed up my things into two heavy suitcases and hopped on my Virgin America flight to Las Vegas. My sister, Emily and her husband Bryce live in Vegas which was a huge advantage. I was able to have a home for my home base instead of an unfamiliar hotel. I was also able to use some of Emily's plastic drawers for under the table storage, a cooler for our food and drinks and other items that made everything so much easier than if we had to bring everything ourselves.

Emily, Bryce and I headed to the convention center on Sunday afternoon to check everything out and set up what we could the day before. There were surprisingly few people around, likely due to the fact that the air conditioning was off making it ridiculously hot inside. Later that day, I picked Duncan up at the airport around 8:30 and we headed back to the house to finish putting all of the products on their newly designed cards. This task, as always, took much longer than expected so I was up until about 2:30 am getting every last thing together.

Four short hours later I was up and headed to the show. My first sale was from a salon owner from Phoenix. She purchased twenty items and started the day off in the right direction. A few hours later I had completed a few more big orders and already covered the cost of the booth! I was getting great feedback on my new packaging and it was amazing to finally hear what people thought of everything after so much preparation. I must have been running on adrenaline because my lack of sleep didn't even hit me until after dinner. I felt initiated after day one was complete and was happy to know what to expect for the next two days.

Click any of the images to see them enlarged.

Even though we were exhausted, Duncan and I headed out to dinner and then to the POOL Opening Party at the Hard Rock Hotel pool. We really wanted to see Glass Candy perform, but we were too exhausted to stay and wait for them to go on. We called it a night around midnight and already couldn't wait to do absolutely nothing after the second day of the show.

Day two and three went really well for us too. It would be slow for a while and then our energy would be recharged after another order was placed. I also had time to do some shopping at some of the other vendor's booths. The awesome items I picked up are worth a separate post of their own.

After a full night's sleep and the completion of day three it was time to hit the town. I treated Duncan to an amazing dinner at Koi at Planet Hollywood for all of his amazing help before and during the show. As you can see in this photo we had an incredible view of the Belagio Fountains and the strip.
After dinner and some tequila we played some quarter slots and in an unexpected turn of events I couldn't lose! I started out by putting in $10, bounced around to a bunch of different machines and continuously won. I never hit a big jackpot, but would get $10 here, $25 there and eventually ended up walking away with over $200. Duncan wasn't quite as lucky, but he was happy only spending about $20 to play the slots and have never ending 'free' bud lights all night.

I'm really happy to have my first big trade show behind me. Now I can go into the next one with more confidence knowing I've made it through one before. I'll be sure to update you soon about where to find Vivi Dot across the US and Canada!

If you own a boutique and are interested in carrying Vivi Dot products please visit the Wholesale Page and submit your information. After that's complete I will follow up and provide you with my line sheet, pattern swatches and order form.

Poolside

So there really is a valid excuse for my lack of blogging as of late... I'm prepping for POOL! I'm laying low and keeping busy behind the scenes getting ready for my biggest show yet. I'll be in the Cash and Carry section of the Pool Tradeshow in Las Vegas August 31st through September 2nd. As I've mentioned before, I'm working on an entirely new line of fabrics made especially for my one inch dots. I'll be posting about these items in the coming month(s) as they become available in the Vivi Dot Online Store so please continue to stay tuned. Photo credit goes to the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. I'm dying to sit poolside with one of their alcoholic snow cones in hand, but prepping for POOL is going to have to win out over sitting by one for now.

I've also commissioned Hanna Nation (aka Gadabout Paper) to draw images of my products for my marketing collateral, line sheet, etc. I saw her gorgeous stationary last week and instantly knew I needed to utilize her amazing skills. I can't wait to see what she comes up with! To top it all off I'll be moving the Vivi Dot headquarters (and the rest of my apartment) at the end of June. I'm overwhelmed with everything that has to be done between now and then (plus a weekend away in Seattle), but some how I'm sure I'll manage. Posting will continue to be sparse, but I hope to have some fun before and after photos of the new place and refinished furniture to share soon.

Here's to the hope of great, productive weekend (drinks raised). Happy Friday!

Catchup!

I've recently returned from an extended weekend road trip down to LA and Santa Barbara. Now it's catchup time as I have about 3 days to sweatshop myself after my day job and crank out as much inventory as possible for my first show of 2009 (Noise Pop N Shop). I've also been very busy designing and producing many sets of save the date magnets for people who have happened upon my post about my sister's magnets. I'll be posting about that entire process as soon as possible with lots of photos to each of the designs I've created for many lovely brides to be. To top it off our hardwood floors are being refinished so we (Duncan, the kitty Olive, the pup Indy and me) are all quarantined to our bedroom. Interested in keeping up with the madness? You can now follow Vivi Dot via Twitter!

Noise Pop And Shop

I’m thrilled to announce that I was accepted to be a part of the Noise Pop & Shop event for the second year in a row! It's exciting to feel that in a tiny little way I'm a part of this 17 year tradition of independent music, arts and film. For those of you who are unfamiliar…
Noise Pop prides itself on bringing exposure to emerging artists, many of whom have gone on to widespread acclaim, including the White Stripes, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, Bright Eyes, The Donnas, Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) and Silversun Pickups. The festival has also featured underground music legends such as Bob Mould, X, Frank Black (of the Pixies), Sleater Kinney, and Television. A sincere willingness to experiment over the years has yielded results like the Noise Pop Education Series, the Noise Pop Film Festival, gallery art shows and more.
The Pop & Shop portion of the festivities will feature over 40 Bay Area designers and artists selling clothing, jewelry, limited edition screen-printed concert posters and more. There will be delicious refreshments (both edible and drinkable) as well as the obvious stellar music.

MMMM Mulled Wine

I made my first batch of mulled wine last year for a Vivi Dot friends and family holiday party/trunk show. It was a huge hit and after making it again at this year's party it's now officially a tradition. You really can't beat the way it makes the whole house smell like the holidays and the recipe I use is especially tasty.

I tend to wing it a bit since I make an extra big batch. For instance if I triple the recipe I don't need to triple the oranges. I also suggest letting it sit for at least the 15 minutes the recipe describes. The longer it sits the better it gets. Just be sure to keep an eye on it once the wine is added so it doesn't get too hot, boil, and take the 'fun' out of it. Also, there's obviously no need to spend much money on the wine since you're adding water, sugar, etc, but if you're like me and want to avoid the instant two buck chuck hangover I'd step it up one notch and go with something in the 3-4 dollar range from Trader Joe's.

Here's the full recipe courtesy of the Food Network

Ingredients
2 cups water
1/2 cup sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
1 fresh whole nutmeg
2 oranges, thinly sliced
1 bottle red wine

Directions
Combine 2 cups of water with the sugar and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Add the orange slices, remove pan from the heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Stir in the wine. Reheat gently over low heat, never allowing to boil. Serve hot, in heated glasses.

The Adventures of a TIMF Vendor

After a marathon weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival I've finally found the time to announce to the blogosphere that it was a success! This show was by far the biggest event the Vivi Dot team has ever participated in and we're proud to say we not only survived, but we had a great time and sold a record number of dots along the way.

Here's how it all went down....
Duncan and I headed out to Treasure Island on Friday to set up and check out our booth space. By the time we arrived it was pretty chilly and windy so set up really only amounted to hanging some lanterns, figuring out our table layout and dropping off as much product and display supplies as we could. We walked around the grounds and were pleasantly surprised to see how small it was. It definitely is a 'boutique festival' and not nearly as daunting as Coachella, Outside Lands, etc. After our quick walk around we were off to Trader Joe's to grab snacks and beverages for the weekend ahead.

We woke up early on Saturday and headed off to pick up Summer and Allie who had coffee and bagels waiting for us. We arrived on Treasure Island around 10am and quickly started setting up the booth. We couldn't have asked for a better location as we were on the corner facing the main entrance/walkway. We were also neighbors with the mini Indie-mart so our friends from Deadbeat Sister, Pop Junkie, etc were right nearby. We were also kitty corner to San Franpsycho who we later realized was run by a guy (Andy) who Duncan grew up skating with. The only drawback to our open corner spot was that we were at the mercy of strong gusts of wind. Thank goodness for cat ties and fishing line! We rigged up some Macgyver type s*#t that saved us from having to have someone guard the outside of the booth and watch for fly-away product.

The concert goers started streaming in at 11:30 and the traffic flow to our booth didn't really slow down at all until after dinner. Duncan and I were able to sneak away to catch a little bit of Hot Chip and Justice and listened to everything else from our booth, which thanks to the alternating stages was easy to do.

Day two went pretty much the same way as the first, but it was a tad busier, warmer and less windy early on. I was excited to see that there were buyers for each of my varied products though rings, small hair clips and watch necklaces seemed to be the biggest sellers. All of the shoppers were upbeat and really excited about what the Vivi Dot booth had to offer. It was awesome to get the Vivi Dot name and products out there to an entirely new set of consumers.

Allie and Summer headed home on the shuttle after dinner. This allowed them to get home at a more reasonable hour and freed up the entire car to get everything home. We started packing up at the designated 9:30, mid way through the Raconteurs set. We made the tough decision to hoof it to the car with everything instead of waiting at least another hour and half before we'd be able to drive onto the grounds. This was a really rough way to end three very long days, but when my head hit the pillow at 11:45 instead of after 1:00am it was definitely worth it. Oh and frozen treat from the ice cream man on the way back from our first of three trips to car didn't hurt either.

Glorious Laborious

I've been sweatshopping myself like crazy in preparation for the Treasure Island Music Festival. I've hand cut thousands and thousands (no exaggeration) of fabric circles, had a bunch of help pressing them all, and have sorted each 'dot' according to which Vivi Dot product they'll become. It was truly a LABOR day weekend!

Lucky for me I was able to get some sun while I pumped out tons of dots. Check out my warm weekend set up below as well as our spread of summery refreshments.

Up next- My first trip to Montana for my sister's wedding this week! I'll be sure to post the many ways the lovely bride incorporated Vivi Dot into her wedding.

Now I'm off to work on my wedding toast!

Treasure Island Music Festival!

I am very very excited to announce that Vivi Dot was chosen to be a vendor at the Treasure Island Music Festival! There are only about 35 spots for non profits, poster sellers, other non food/drink vendors so I thought making it was quite a long shot. Nonetheless I got word last week that I'm in!

I've got a ton of work ahead of me to prepare for the 12,000 person crowds two days in a row. Any wagers on how many circles I'll cut between now and then?
I'm looking forward to finding out who else will be selling there. Kelly (Indiemart) is putting together a mini Indie-Mart within a couple of booths, but that's all I know so far.

Buy your tickets soon because the line-up is amazing!

Indie-mart named best of the Bay

Congrats to Indie-mart (and Kelly) for winning the 'Best Nomadic Hipster Boutique' in the 2008 Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay awards! Check out the fun write up below:
The Mission Indie Mart, a roaming thrift store, local design showcase, and barbecue that takes place monthly in backyards and at dive bars throughout the Mission District was dreamt up by Kelly Malone, a tattooed hipster chick with three lifelong obsessions: DIY fashion, hard drinking, and good times. Sadly, while her hobbies did wonders for her social life, they caused quite a stir at the Gap, where Malone had been working for more than 10 years. So she set up her own business. Her brainchild has become a staple of Mission dwelling: a monthly opportunity to mingle with artists, musicians, fashion designers, misfits, and fall-down drunks like the founder herself, whose hourly announcements at MIM evolve throughout the day from straightforward information to inebriated performance art. Her best line to date: "The bathrooms are in the back, the T-shirts are in the corner, and the vodka is in my belly. Now come on stage and let's get naked, bitches. Wooo!"

And another congrats should go to Broke-Ass Stuart who won for Best Local Author! You can often find Stuart selling his books and T's at Indie-mart too.

SFIndieFashion Mention!

I'm very excited to report that Vivi Dot was mentioned in an SFIndieFashion.com post! SFIndieFashion is a go to place for me to make sure I'm up to date on all of the indie fashion happenings in the Bay Area. Lorraine Sanders is the author behind the site and does a great job covering events, spreading the word about local designers, etc, etc. I read her posts regularly and was very excited to see 'Vivi Dot' listed in an interview piece with the one and only Kelly Malone (of Indie-mart and Still Life).

"This week, Kelly was kind enough to let us bug her with our questions during an afternoon visit to Still Life, where you’ll find lots of lovely creations and men’s and women’s apparel from local folks like Nooworks, Amanda Archer, Kate Durkin, Turk & Taylor, 19 Moons Jewelry, Please Dress Up and Vivi Dot."

Make sure to check out the full article and add SFIndieFashion.com to your list of sites to check often!

Renegade Craft Fair

This weekend marked the first annual Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. I opted out of applying for this show as it wasn't great timing for a huge event for Vivi Dot, but I was very excited to attend as a shopper!

I did my homework beforehand and checked out all of vendor's websites. I like seeing how people portray themselves online and how it then contrasts with their presence at an event like this. It looked like there would be a decent number of vendors from out of town which meant a lot of great new things I haven't seen before.

One stop I knew I would have to make was at the Post Card Machine. Check out this YouTube video of the 'machine' in action and you'll see why.

As far as my purchases go, I am very proud to say that I avoided my usual temptation for clothing and jewelry and spent my money on art to decorate my walls instead!

I came home with this awesome one of kind piece from Michelle Caplan. I hung it at the top of the stairs and seem to like it even more each time I see it.

I'm also expecting this 'sprout-about wheel stick' in the mail within 2-3 weeks from Sprout Studio. I can't wait to get this hung up in my living room!

We timed it just right to see/hear the crazy performance by Mucca Pazza as well. They're not your average marching band, in all the best ways possible.

reCapsule & a new booth!

What started out as a long overdue recap of the Capsule Street Fair (aka my RECAPsule) has quickly turned into a detailed description of the redesign of my Vivi Dot booth. So here it goes...

This May's Capsule Design Festival was a success! I was busier than usual before the event because I decided to redesign my entire booth. I've been wanting to add some height to my display for some time so everything wasn't just flat on my table, but I didn't have any specific plans beyond that. That was until I was at Target and saw a garden mushroom that for some reason I knew I had to have. I wasn't sure what I'd do with it at the time of purchase, but before long I had envisioned a total overhaul of my booth with the mushroom as my inspiration. A lot of the fabrics I use feature whimsical forest creatures like squirrels, owls, hedgehogs, mushrooms, etc so I figured a happy forest theme was a good fit.

I had a bunch of grandiose ideas about how my booth could come together if I had all the time and resources I desired. I talked through some of my ideas with Duncan and his dad over dinner and Jeff suggested that I check out the flower mart as they would likely have most of the things I needed to make my brainstorms a reality. Duncan and I headed down there the next day and confirmed that it was just the place I needed to go. I found everything I needed- a few light weight planters, tiger branches that would be perfect for my earring tree, moss, a cute little owl, floral styrofoam and other odds and ends. I set my table up in our garage and started assembling.

I had scoured the Internet for something light weight that would look like tree stumps to hold up my shelf and give my display some much need height. I searched all over the place for paper mache ideas, planters, foot stools, etc but didn't come across anything that was just right. I did run across an awesome blog titled 'It's Knot Wood' that posts all things faux bois (fake wood) which was great for inspiration. Most importantly they reminded me about woodgrain contact paper! Viola! I'd make my own tree stumps!

I ended up finding two galvanized metal, tall flower pots that would be just the right height for the project. Next I cut a couple of big pieces of contact paper (which I found at ACE hardware) and crumpled them up. This was quite fun since avoiding wrinkles is usually the trickiest part of working with contact paper. I started attaching it to the upside down flower pots and my tree trunk idea finally became a reality.

Here are some additional updates I made:
* Added additional table linens for more color
* Made a new Vivi Dot sign from foix bois contact paper and coordinating paper
* Made new price tags and laminated them with my new favorite craft toy
* Created a pot full of flower brooches with the card holders you get in a bouquet of flowers (spray painted them green)
* Put together an earring tree out of tiger branches- complete with a cute little owl
* Made a fabric covered board on a diagonal slope to make it easier to see everything- I added ridges made out of doweling to keep everything from sliding
* Covered the button board frame and easel with the foix bois contact paper

Check out my photos of my redisigned booth from the May Capsule Street Fair below. And if you live in San Francisco you can come check it out in person at the Indie-mart on July 27th (12-6pm at Thee Parkside in Potrero Hill).

Oxymoronic

Today's oxymoron is: sweatshop party**

Thanks to Allie and Summer for all of their hard work this past Sunday! They came over and helped me pump out a bunch of buttons for the upcoming Capsule show. We've coined the term 'sweatshop party' for these get togethers, but lucky for us the conditions are actually quite comfy. I had strawberries, veggies, crackers, horseradish dip, and bloody mary's waiting for them when they arrived. We also finished the long day off with a nice dinner at my new favorite sushi place, Shimo in the Richmond.

Now I've got a ton of gluing ahead of me and I'm hoping to completely redesign my booth set up before the big event. Speaking of the big event...
If you're in San Francisco on Memorial Day weekend make sure to come by the Capsule Street Fair on Sunday. I'm in booth number 1 on the corner of Hayes and Octavia. Duncan, Allie, Summer, Ryan and I will be hanging out, drinking sake from True Sake down the street, and slangin' Vivi Dot from 11-6.

Just to be overly, overly cautious and clear:
** Please note that Vivi Dot is wholeheartedly against sweatshops and would never force anyone to work in difficult or dangerous conditions. Everything from Vivi Dot is handmade with love, voluntary sweat, in the company of friends and sometimes fueled by an alcoholic beverage or two (though never enough to compromise our quality control).

And to hopefully offset my 'humorous' misuse of a very serious subject, please check out Sweatshopwatch.org. It's an organization aimed to empower workers and educate consumers about how to be a conscious shopper!

Why ‘Dot Girl’

One of the things I love the most about doing shows is being able to interact face to face with my customers. Unlike selling through stores or online, it gives me chance to hear people’s feedback, get their ideas, and hear their stories. It’s really awesome to have people recognize my things from stores they shop in. I often get, ‘I bought a ring of yours at Needles and Pens’ or ‘my friend bought me a set of your buttons at ParkLife!’ It’s also great for product development! People ask for specific prints (I’m still looking for cute bee fabric for a bee keeper) and finally tracked down some cuff link findings after many inquiries about Vivi Dot cuff links.

One girl said she got a compliment on a Vivi Dot item she was wearing from someone working at a store (I think a store on Polk street). Apparently she asked if she had bought it from ‘the dot girl.’ I’ve gotten ‘button lady’ before, but ‘dot girl’ is much, much better and has since become the title of my blog.

The all time best quote from a shopper at an event was at last year’s Capsule Street Fair. A young guy was debating between a Biggie and 2Pac button. He decided on 2Pac and started off down the street. As he walked away he turned back and said, ‘I bet that button maker changed your life. It sure looks like it did!’ I swear it could have been the closing line in a 1980’s brat pack movie (just sub ‘button maker’ for ‘day in detention’).

April Indie-Mart

April's Indie-mart was a hot one! It was over 80 degrees outside and we were definitely feeling the burn inside. You could really feel the temperature raise as you walked from the front of the bar to the back (where my booth was). The turnout was pretty good considering it was not a day anyone should be spending inside a dark, muggy bar.

I was excited to get people's reaction to all of the new fabric (cupcakes, kitties, penguins, spiders, tomatoes, 'lil chicks, etc) and new items (large hair clips and sweater clips). The feedback was definitely positive and sales reflected an interest in the new items as well. Yay!

I had the pleasure of sharing the stage area with Mushroom Project #15 and Jeyn Reyn. Summer bought an awesome Mushroom Project #15 dress and I bought a really cute hair clip from Jeyn!

Here are some pics from the day:
My loyal helpers! Summer- booth attendant and sweatshop worker & Duncan- my roadie.

Allie (the other loyal sweatshop worker and booth attendant) was hosting book club today, otherwise she'd be sweating thru this one with us.

The ring tray- can you spot the new fabrics?
